Preparing for Another Boston Winter

While we don’t necessarily want to think about it now another Boston winter is right around the corner. We know that while we may be enjoying the pool and the BBQ’s scooping up 5 feet of snow is not far behind. So how should you prepare your home and family for some of the most brutally cold days . We asked our fellow Bostonians to share some of their best tips.

Before the snow hits make sure you:

  1. Clean out the gutters, disconnect and drain all outside hoses.

  2. Insulate walls and attics

  3. Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows.

  4. Remove tree branches that could get weighed down with ice or snow and fall on your house

  5. Wrap water pipes in your basement with insulation sleeves

  6. Consider an insulated blanket for your hot water heater.

  7. Have a professional check your roof to see if it would sustain the weight of a heavy snowfall.

  8. Make sure your furniture isn't blocking your home’s heating vents to prevent fires.

During the winter:

  1. During cold spells, keep cabinet doors open to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.

  2. If going on vacation during cold periods, consider draining the water system.

  3. Keep a back up source of light such as candles and flashlights.

  4. When the power goes out as it often does keep some board games handy and an electric heated throw.

  5. To prevent pipes from freeing leave faucets dripping at night and open the cabinet doors so the pipes are less likely to freeze.

  6. Go slow when shoveling snow it’s a serious workout and puts a great deal of strain on the heart. Make sure to also stretch before you begin to avoid back injury.

As always we will survive!
